There is nothing more frustrating than buying a beautiful perfume or crafting a custom fragrance only for it to fade away before lunch. The longevity of a fragrance primarily depends on its concentration (Eau de Toilette vs. Eau de Parfum) and its base notes, but how and where you apply it matters just as much. Here are expert tips from our perfume workshop in Prague to ensure your signature scent lasts all day.
1. Apply to Pulse Points
Fragrance reacts to heat. Applying perfume to your pulse points—where your veins are closest to the skin's surface—helps to naturally diffuse the scent throughout the day. The most common pulse points are the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ear lobes, and the inner elbows. This technique is universally recommended by perfumers when you make your own perfume.
2. Moisturize First
Perfume evaporates much faster on dry skin. Lock in the scent by applying an unscented body lotion or Vaseline to your pulse points before spraying your fragrance. The oils in the lotion give the perfume molecules something to cling to, dramatically increasing the lifespan of your custom perfume.
3. Don't Rub Your Wrists
This is a very common mistake! Rubbing your wrists together creates friction and heat, which breaks down the perfume's molecules and forces the delicate top notes to evaporate much faster than intended. Instead, simply spray and let it air dry completely.
4. Focus on the Base Notes
If longevity is your absolute primary goal, choose or create a perfume with a strong foundation of base notes. Ingredients like musk, vanilla, amber, and heavy woods have larger, heavier molecules that anchor the lighter notes to your skin, sometimes lasting for up to 24 hours. During our perfume making experience in Prague, our experts will guide you on how to properly dose these powerful fixatives to create an enduring masterpiece.
