When you step into a perfume workshop in Prague, you are greeted by an overwhelming array of scents. To make sense of this aromatic world, perfumers use a classification system known as Fragrance Families. Understanding these families is the essential first step when you decide to make your own perfume and discover a custom fragrance that perfectly represents your personality.

1. The Fresh Family: Vibrant and Energetic

Fresh fragrances are zesty, vibrant, and uplifting. They are characterized by bright citrus notes such as bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, and mandarin. Sometimes, this family also incorporates aquatic (oceanic) or green (cut grass, crushed leaves) elements. If you are looking to create a daytime custom fragrance that feels clean, sporty, or energizing, the Fresh family is your ideal starting point.

2. The Floral Family: Classic and Romantic

By far the most popular and expansive category, the Floral family ranges from the delicate scent of a single flower (a soliflore) to complex, heady bouquets. Core ingredients often include Damask rose, jasmine sambac, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. During our perfume making experience in Prague, many guests use floral heart notes to bring romance, femininity, and classic elegance to their signature scent.

3. The Woody Family: Earthy and Grounding

Woody fragrances are built on warm, profound, and earthy base notes. Ingredients like creamy sandalwood, dry cedarwood, smoky vetiver, and rich patchouli define this group. They are often perceived as mysterious and sophisticated. Incorporating woody notes into your blend is a fantastic way to give your custom perfume lasting power and a strong, confident character, making them excellent choices for evening wear or colder seasons.

4. The Amber (Oriental) Family: Exotic and Sensual

Formerly known as Oriental, Amber fragrances are intense, exotic, and sensual. They rely heavily on warm spices, rich resins, sweet vanilla, and musk. These scents are luxurious and known for their incredible longevity on the skin. If you want a fragrance that turns heads and leaves a lasting trail (sillage), blending amber notes is the secret.

The true magic of perfumery lies in blending. Modern masterpieces often cross boundaries, creating sub-categories like Floral-Amber or Woody-Fresh. Knowing which family you naturally gravitate towards will make creating your own perfume an intuitive, exciting, and deeply personal journey at Scents of Prague.
